Bleed and margins solve opposite problems. Bleed pushes disposable artwork past the cut edge so a full-page image does not end with a white sliver. Margins pull essential content away from the cut edge and binding so ingredients, page numbers, and instructions remain readable.
Confusing the two creates familiar print failures: a photo that almost reaches the edge, text clipped by trim variation, or quantities disappearing into the gutter. A cookbook needs both a manufacturing boundary and a reader-safe area.
The four lines on a print page
Think of each page as four nested boundaries:
- Bleed edge — the outer edge of the supplied PDF page.
- Trim line — the intended finished edge after cutting.
- Safe margin — the inner boundary for essential text and details.
- Gutter or inside margin — extra space where the page enters the binding.
Only background color, photographs, and decorative elements should occupy the bleed. Essential content belongs inside the safe area. The trim line is a target, not a perfectly precise knife path; small manufacturing variation is normal.
This is why placing a page number exactly on the trim line cannot be fixed by export settings. The design itself is unsafe.
When a cookbook needs bleed
Use interior bleed when any page has an image, colored background, or graphic that is meant to reach the physical edge. On KDP, if even one interior page needs bleed, the entire manuscript is set up as a bleed interior. KDP supports interior bleed for fixed-format files such as print-ready PDF.
A recipe book with photographs contained inside white frames may not need interior bleed. A photo-led book with full-page chapter openers almost certainly does. Neither choice is more professional; the right choice follows the visual system.
Bleed does not mean stretching a photo at export. Extend the original image or background through the bleed area in the layout. Keep the important part of the dish inside the trim and safe lines so trimming cannot remove it.
How much bleed to add
Always use the target printer's specification. Amazon KDP currently requires 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) beyond the top, bottom, and outside edge of a bleed interior. Its formula makes the PDF page 0.125 inch wider and 0.25 inch taller than the selected trim size.
For a 6 × 9 inch page, that produces a 6.125 × 9.25 inch bleed page. There is no extra bleed added at the bound inside edge in KDP's interior formula.
These measurements come from KDP's official trim, bleed, and margin guide. Another printer may request 3 mm, 0.125 inch on all sides, or a different PDF setup. Do not mix specifications from multiple vendors.
Margins are minimums, not design targets
A printer's minimum margin is the smallest technically accepted distance. It is not necessarily comfortable for a cookbook. Recipe text is dense, used at a distance, and repeatedly scanned between cooking steps. More breathing room can improve usability even when the file would pass with less.
KDP's current minimum outside margins are 0.25 inch for a no-bleed interior and 0.375 inch for an interior with bleed. The required inside margin increases with page count, beginning at 0.375 inch for 24–150 pages and rising in steps for thicker books.
Treat these as a floor. Test actual pages with:
- the longest ingredient name;
- two-column layouts;
- page numbers;
- running heads;
- step photographs;
- callout boxes;
- full-page captions.
A visually balanced cookbook often uses more generous margins than the platform minimum.
The gutter changes with binding and page count
The gutter is where content is lost toward the spine. A thicker book bends less easily and needs more inside space. Binding type also changes the experience: a perfect-bound paperback does not open as flat as a spiral-bound manual.
Do not set the same left and right margin on every page as if the document were a stack of flyers. Facing pages mirror the inside and outside margins:
- left-hand page: gutter on the right;
- right-hand page: gutter on the left.
Design applications can manage facing-page margins automatically. If the tool cannot, test the exported sequence carefully. A common error is putting the larger margin on the outside edge for half the book.
Keep critical photo content safe
A full-bleed image occupies the bleed, trim, and safe zones, but its composition still respects them. Keep these elements away from the trim and gutter:
- the focal ingredient;
- plate rims;
- hands or faces;
- labels and packaging;
- text embedded in the image;
- small garnish that completes the composition.
For a spread, do not assume the two pages create a seamless panoramic image. Some content disappears into the binding, and page alignment can vary. Avoid placing a knife, spoon, face, or line of type directly across the center.
Build a page template with guides
Set guides once at the document level:
- trim boundary;
- bleed boundary;
- minimum safe area;
- actual design margins;
- baseline grid or column grid;
- reserved page-number zone.
Lock those guides. Then build master pages for common recipe patterns: one-page recipe, two-page recipe, chapter opener, technique page, and full-page photo. This prevents each recipe from inventing its own geometry.
If you are deciding between page shapes, choose the cookbook trim size first. Bleed and margin values depend on the final format and page count.
Run three levels of preflight
1. Layout preflight
Confirm every object that should bleed crosses the trim line all the way to the bleed edge. Search for text frames, page numbers, and logos outside the safe area. Resolve overset text.
2. PDF preflight
Open the exported PDF and verify its exact page dimensions. Make sure it contains single pages, not spreads, and that crop marks were not added unless explicitly requested. The broader print-ready cookbook PDF checklist covers fonts, images, color, and ordering.
3. Platform preview
Upload the PDF to the printer's preview tool. Inspect every flagged page rather than automatically approving warnings. Preview the spine-side edge of long recipes and the outside edge of page numbers.
Print a home boundary test
Even before ordering a proof, print representative pages at 100 percent scale. Draw the trim line if the home printer cannot print full bleed, then cut the page with a ruler. Stack several sheets or place them in a binder to simulate some gutter loss.
Read an ingredient list from normal counter distance. If your eye has to chase text into the binding or a quantity sits near the cut edge, increase the margin. This test is imperfect but much more informative than zooming in and out on a screen.

Bleed and margins are not decorative polish. They are the tolerance system that lets a digital layout become a reliable physical object. Establish the printer, trim size, page count, and binding; build guides from those values; then verify the exported PDF and a physical proof.
If you are still at the content stage, create a cookbook and use a representative long recipe to test the page geometry before formatting the full book.
